There has been a movement for a while now to support local businesses as opposed to big businesses and “big box” stores. Shopping locally has its benefits. It helps to keep the revenue within our own community. The money isn’t used to support giant stores or overseas production facilities. You get to know the owners if you frequent a place often enough which really helps lend to the feeling of community. Like “Cheers,” it’s nice to go where everybody knows your name!
If you use local produce stores, you probably know they usually try to get their produce from local growers. Now you are helping your local farmers and your local store owner. It feels good to contribute to your own community. With something as simple as going to the local produce store instead of a chain grocery store, you really are making a difference.
Another great thing about locally owned companies is that they usually enjoy giving back to their community. They want it to be a reciprocal relationship. They don’t expect you to support them without supporting you in return. This may be in the form of something like sponsoring a little league team, providing their uniforms. Oftentimes, they are willing to participate in fundraisers, as well. This may be for something big like your child’s school or something small like your child’s specific boy or girl scout troop. For example, a church in Melbourne, FL is raising money for a missions trip to El Salvador. They approached a local eatery which enthusiastically agreed to donate ten percent of their profits for a night to the church’s trip. But, being local, they went above and beyond their commitment. The owner decided to match the amount, making it a twenty percent donation! That’s what we call community spirit!
It isn’t hard to shop or eat locally, especially here on the east coast of Florida. Our coast is lined with small beach towns that have an abundance of locally owned shops, businesses, and restaurants.
