Making Your Hurricane Shutters Last

Anytime you put money into your home you hope that it is a good decision.  Often, people think that they will stay in their homes forever, but they end up moving for any of a variety of reasons.  There are some investments, though, that will always be worth it.  You will be able to enjoy the investment while you live there, and it may be a selling point if you do sell your home.  For instance, high-quality countertops and flooring are something that you will enjoy and your buyers will too!  Another great investment that you will get to use and any buyer will be thrilled to have is hurricane shutters!  No buyer will say, “I wish this house didn’t have protection from hurricanes!”

Choose a Professional Installer

There are measures you can take to make sure your hurricane shutters last making your investment all the more worth it.  The first thing we recommend is getting your shutters from a professional installer.  While buying them and installing them yourself may seem like a good cost-saving idea, you are talking about protecting your home from debris flying through the air at over 100 miles per hour.  Please use a professional, so that they are installed properly.

Keep the Shutter Tracks Clean

Once you have ordered your shutters and had them installed by a professional (hopefully us!), you will want to maintain them to get them to last as long as possible.  If your shutters run on a track, then you need to keep that track free of any debris – dirt, sand, dead bugs, leaves, etc.  Simply wash them with water or soapy water, as needed.  You should keep any hinges and the tracks well lubricated with a silicone spray lubricant, NOT WD-40 which can attract dirt and salt.  If you live on the beachside, then you know you don’t need anything attracting MORE salt to your home!

Use Soapy Water

You should also keep your shutters clean by washing them with soapy water.  It not only helps maintain them, but it keeps them looking nice, particularly if they are shutters that are up year-round, such as colonial shutters or Bahama shutters.  The better you maintain your shutters and all their parts, the longer they will last.
