Hurricane Procedures in School

When there are emergency weather conditions the school superintendent of Brevard Public Schools is the person who gives directive orders that schools are closed. When this decision has been made the district will then communicate to the parents, teachers and staff about the closures as quickly as possible to make sure that all parties are aware. The best way this is communicated is through email, voicemail and text.

Most schools are required to perform fire drills, hurricane drills, tornado drills, earthquake drills and lockdown according to the federal government. These drills are the most basic emergency drills in schools and are to be carried out once a month. Schools are notified ahead of time and closed in advance when there are severe weather conditions arising such as a hurricane or tropical storm. Because schools are closed ahead of time during hurricanes families must assemble a plan for evacuations and get prepared. Remember to stay on top of weather alerts during heavy storms and make sure you and your family are prepared.

Here are some items to pack during a hurricane if you evacuate:

  • Pack enough food and water to last a few days for you and your family.
  • Bring any medications and a First Aid Kit.
  • Bring trash bags, paper towels, toilet paper, can opener, eating utensils, water bottles, and anything else that you will need.
  • Bring a few changes of clothes.
  • Bring soap and toiletries.
  • Bring a flashlight, candles and a lighter.

It is important to know the weather related terms such as a tropical wave, tropical depression, tropical storm, storm surge, tropical storm watch, tropical storm warning, hurricane watch, and hurricane warning. When there is an expected hurricane in a specified area there is a 36 hour warning. During this time it’s highly important to be prepared to take any immediate actions to protect you and your family. In schools, data is backed up and computer hardware is secured from weather conditions before leaving the school.
